Hard Drive Sanitizing - Data DestructionConfidential Information? Sensitive Files? Personal or Company
Records? Replacing a hard drive?
Many people think that dropping a file into the Recyle Bin
and then emptying the Recycle Bin is enough to get rid of a sensitive file or program or
graphic, etc. No, it is not enough. The file is deleted but not overwritten. It could
easily be recovered using free or commercial software. One thing you could do to make sure
the file cannot be recovered is wipe it before you "delete" it. There are a
number of free and commercial programs available for that purpose. Erasure is an excellent
free program, while Filevac is an excellent shareware program. There are many other
programs which will do the same thing with varying degrees of success. Read the fine
print. A program which has the capability of the 35 pass Gutmann procedure is a good
start.
However, what if you want the entire hard drive (or floppies)
deleted and wiped to prevent anyone else from recovering your sensitive data? There are
some excellent, and not so excellent, programs available. The programs are usually
shareware or commercial. The programs usually are executed from a boot floppy. If you are
comfortable with boot floppies, DOS or Linux then you may suceed in the wipe process
yourself. However, would the program you use delete and wipe ALL the data on the hard
drive? Perhaps not. I am aware of only three commercial programs which wipe ALL sectors on
a hard drive. So it comes down to this: do you hire someone to wipe your hard drive for
you - and know it is done right, or do you do it yourself - and possible leave data on the
hard drive.
We specialize in data destruction, or sanitizing. After
we wipe your hard drive, nothing remains. For absolute top security we can physically
destroy the magnetic layer on the hard drive platters. The procedures we use to wipe a
hard drive can be confirmed by taking the wiped hard drive to a reconstruction or forensic
recovery expert for testing, if a certificate is required.
The secure wiping procedures we use are appropriate for
individuals, companies, corporations and government. A company may wish to donate old PCs
to a charity for instance, without their confidential data being recoverable. An
individual or company may be upgrading hard drives, and want to be sure there is nothing
sensitive left on the old hard drives. Government cost recovery means selling off older
computers, quite often with the hard drives still installed.
